| ANGEL, NO PARDON, NAME IN HIM EXODUS 23:20-23 Behold, I send an Angel (1) before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. 21 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions (2): for my name is in him (3). 22 But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. 23 For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle. 12 And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight. 13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people. 14 And he said, My presence (4) shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. King James Bible (Oxford) 1769 (As near as I can tell there were 47 translators and a multitude of sources used.) `Lo, I am sending a messenger before thee to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee in unto the place which I have prepared; Young’s Literal Translation 1862 (Young used the Textus Receptus and the Majority Text as the basis for his translation.) Behold, I send a messenger before thee to guard thee in the way, and to bring thee to the place which I prepared. Julia E. Smith Translation 1876 (Translated from the original tongues.) “Messenger” would have been a better translation here. When translators chose to use angel here it gives some people the impression that Christ is not only an angel but a created being when he is not. |
