The story of the Exodus from Egypt as recorded in the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament is well known by believers and non-believers. Ten plagues came upon Egypt to break the will of their Pharaoh so that he would release the children of Israel from their slavery to go into the wilderness to worship Almighty God. The tenth plague involved the death of the firstborn. This even affected the first-born son of Pharaoh. The children of Israel were instructed by God through Moses on how to spare their firstborn. As you know, a lamb of the first year and without blemish was to be slain on the 14th day of the first month. Its blood was to be smeared on the doorposts and lintel of each home. When the death angel came at midnight, it would “pass over” every house that had the blood upon its entrance. The blood of the lamb saved the firstborn and gave them victory over death. This ceremony of slaying a lamb every year was to be kept by the Israelites down through their generations. It looked forward to the time when Jesus, the lamb of God, would be slain for our sins (I Corinthians 5:7). More on this later. The death of the firstborn finally broke the will of Pharaoh, and he commanded Moses and company to leave Egypt. Thus, the Exodus began. Their departure began on the 15th day of the first month (Numbers 33:3). After their departure, Pharaoh wanted vengeance. When he learned that the Israelites had become entangled in the wilderness and were headed for a boxed-in location, he quickly assembled his chariots and pursued after them (Exodus 14:1-9). “As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians marching after them, and they were terrified… They said to Moses, ‘Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us into the wilderness to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt’” (verses 10-11). It wasn’t just the firstborn that were facing death. Now, it was the whole nation. Their backs were against the sea and there was no escape. This time, it was not blood that would give them the victory over death, it was water. As everyone knows, God parted the Red Sea for them to escape certain death. God then used the Red Sea to destroy the Egyptians. This was a great victory which was celebrated in Exodus 15. This wasn’t the first time that God had saved His people by water. Notice: “Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water” (I Peter 3:20). Continue: “Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (verse 21). The Israelites crossing through the Red Sea was a type of baptism which points us to the death and resurrection of Jesus. “Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea. And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea.” (I Corinthians 10:1-2). The apostle Paul further states: “For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is worthless and you are still in your sins” (I Corinthians 15:16-17). In other words, you are as good as dead if there is no hope of a resurrection. “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” (I Corinthians 15:56). At Christ’s crucifixion, it was getting late in the day and a high Sabbath was coming on. To hasten the death of those on a cross, they would break their legs. However, Jesus was already dead. Why? “Instead, one of the soldiers [had] pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out” (John 19:34). The blood and water both play an important part in our salvation. The Word of God is also likened unto water. “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word” (Ephesians 5:25-26). I Corinthians 15:54 says that our day of victory over death will be complete when our flesh is changed from mortal to immortal. And what day will that be? “Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet” (I Corinthians 15:51-52). The Resurrection of the Firstborn will take place at the seventh and last trumpet which will occur on a future Pentecost aka Feast of Firstfruits. This understanding has been expounded in other articles. Briefly, the seven trumpets depicted in the Book of Revelation sound according to the same pattern that is formed by the seven annual Sabbaths according to the Jewish Civil Calendar which begins in the autumn. Four will sound in the autumn and three in the spring. Thus, the seventh trumpet will sound on a future Pentecost which pictures the Resurrection at Christ’s return to gather the Elect from the four winds of heaven. Christ will take His Bride to heaven for the wedding supper then return on the following Feast of Trumpets to make war with the hostile nations. Consequently, Pentecost will be a day of victory over death. Pentecost means “fiftieth.” This 50th day is an annual Sabbath. The entire 50-day festival begins with the barley harvest in the spring. On the first day, a wavesheaf offering is made with the first cut grain. This wavesheaf offering was the first of the firstfruits. It was fulfilled by Jesus Christ when He rose from the dead centuries ago. Thus, the first day of this 50-day count was a day of victory over death just as the 50th day will also be a day of victory when Pentecost is fulfilled. With this in mind, there are some beliefs about the Exodus that I wish to address. When and where did the Israelites cross the Red Sea? The Israelites began their departure from Egypt on the 15th day of the first month as previously noted. No date is given in scripture for the Red Sea crossing. Some believe that the Israelites crossed on the 17th day of the first month. Some believe that they crossed on the seventh and last day of unleavened bread which would have been the 21st day of the first month. Also, it is believed that the Israelites were not completely out of Egypt until the Red Sea crossing. The site of the Red Sea crossing is also believed to have occurred on the Gulf of Suez. However, there is growing evidence that the Red Sea crossing occurred on the Gulf of Aqaba which is much farther away. There are many films and videos available for you to research a likely Red Sea crossing site. Nuweiba Beach on the Gulf of Aqaba is a prime candidate which means that it is very unlikely that the Israelites could have reached this location within six days and then crossed on the 21st day of the first month. Recall again what the Israelites said to Moses when they saw the Egyptian army. They said that they were already out of Egypt. Read it again in Exodus 14:11. As already stated, the Red Sea crossing was a Day of Victory over death. With this understanding, we can determine a possible date for this Victory Crossing. The Red Sea crossing was the beginning of their journey to the mountain of God in Arabia to receive God’s ten commandments which are laws of life. The Israelites arrived at the base of Mount Sinai in the third month after they had left Egypt. As a result of the timing, it is believed that God gave His ten commandments and entered into a covenant with Israel on what would have been Pentecost day. I agree with this possibility, but this is where things get sticky and controversial. Exodus 19:1 gives the date when they arrived at Mount Sinai. But hardly anyone agrees with what it says because of the belief that God appeared to Israel on Pentecost. You see, nearly everyone believes that the count toward Pentecost must start during the seven Days of Unleavened Bread which fall on the 15th through the 21st days of the first month. This means that the latest that Pentecost can occur is the 12th day of the third month by doing a rough estimate (9+29+12=50). Yet it appears that the Israelites didn’t arrive at Mount Sinai until the 15th day of the third month. If they arrived on the same day of the month that they had left from Egypt, then it would have been the 15th day. This date does not fall within anyone’s wavesheaf theory for figuring a Pentecost date. Furthermore, Pentecost fell on the 17th day of the third month that year as I figure it. I doubt anyone would agree with this late of a date for Pentecost. “Houston, we have a problem!” Yet, when you read the instructions given in Leviticus 23:9-21, that late of a date for Pentecost is allowed. It may not be the norm, but God is not a fool. He foresaw that circumstances can sometimes cause a delayed harvest just as happens today. With ten plagues hitting Egypt that year, things were certainly not “normal.” If Pentecost did fall on the 17th day of the third month that year, then let’s determine the wavesheaf day by counting back from that date. If there were 29 days in the second month of the Hebrew Calendar as is calculated today, then 17 plus 29 gives us 46 days. The first month probably had 30 days as is calculated today. That would bring us to the 27th day of the first month when the wavesheaf offering would have occurred that year. If the wavesheaf offering pictures a Day of Victory as does Pentecost, then this is when the Red Sea crossing took place. My calculations may not be exact. They are to illustrate that the day of the wave-sheaf offering (a day picturing victory)can be delayed when certain conditions cause it. If the day of the wavesheaf offering is delayed, then the count toward Pentecost (50th day) will not occur as it normally would in other years. That’s crazy you may think. Maybe so. But that date would have given the Israelites 12 days to travel to Nuweiba Beach on the Gulf of Aqaba. The Israelites knew that they had to put as much distance between themselves and Pharaoh as fast as possible. There was no time to waste. No time to stop at any scenic overlooks to take any photo shots of the family with the Wilderness Alps in the background. They knew what was at stake. This was expressed when Pharaoh’s army finally caught up with them as we read earlier. After the Red Sea crossing and the threat of Pharaoh removed, the Israelites could travel on to Mount Sinai at a slower pace. God was now able to introduce the weekly Sabbath of rest to them which foreshadows the millennial rest. As we get closer to the end time, things will also get crazy. We have all seen just how bizarre weather can be at times. Christ warned that no one would know the day or hour of His coming. Thus, He warned us to watch (Matthew 25:13). Will we heed Christ’s warning, or will we hold unto something that may prove to be misleading and disappointing? Only time will tell. Put your faith in Christ and not in a date. |

Laura writes: Exo 14:10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD. Exo 14:11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? Read it again there is no statement here saying they were now out of Egypt. The phrasing is “to carry us forth out of Egypt.” In other words, they were on their way out of Egypt which is what the trip was intended for, to take them out of Egypt. Just before this they stated “hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness?” When they saw the Egyptian army coming behind them, they clearly thought they had been brought into the wilderness to die. There is nothing here about them already being out of Egypt. In order for them to be out of Egypt they would have had to be at least halfway if not all the way through the Red Sea and in verse 10 and 11 here they have not even started to cross the red sea yet. Dwight Flemings Article: It wasn’t just the firstborn that were facing death. Now, it was the whole nation. Their backs were against the sea and there was no escape. The wave sheaf offering represents the ecclesia, the called-out ones. Read what Edersheim and others have to say about what happens with the wave sheaf. There is a certain amount of grain gathered for the wave sheaf and then it is put through the fire and then through many sieves for refining. Those who are called are put through the fire and refined many times. Then in the end only part of the grain gathered for this offering is used. Many are called but few are chosen. The wave sheaf offering in no way represents Christ. It represents the ecclesia, the called-out ones. Dwight Flemings Article: Thus, the first day of this 50-day count was a day of victory over death just as the 50th day will also be a day of victory when Pentecost is fulfilled. Well and then there is this: Gal 4:25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. Here are the travels of the Children of Israel from Rameses to the Red Sea: Num 33:3 And they departed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the morrow after the passover the children of Israel went out with an high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians. Num 33:5 And the children of Israel removed from Rameses and pitched in Succoth. Num 33:6 And they departed from Succoth, and pitched in Etham, which is in the edge of the wilderness. Num 33:7 And they removed from Etham, and turned again unto Pihahiroth, which is before Baalzephon: and they pitched before Migdol. Num 33:8 And they departed from before Pihahiroth and passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness, and went three days’ journey in the wilderness of Etham, and pitched in Marah. The Israelites traveled day and night and only camped three times between Rameses and the Red Sea. So yes, they could have made it in a week or less. They were in a hurry to get out of Egypt. The entire Sinai Peninsula was part of Egypt at the time of the Exodus, so they would have had to been at least half way across the Red Sea in order to be out of Egypt. Laura writes: It only gets sticky when you make up your own Holy Days or when you continue to follow the Holy Days that Herbert Armstrong taught you to follow in error. Herbert Armstrong did bring a lot of truth to us from the Bible, but he did not have everything right, nor did he understand every single thing that he read and taught to many. If he had it all right, there would be no controversy today. The Pharisees (Now Orthodox Jews) followed a Sivan 6 Pentecost as is stated unto this day on the Hebrew Calendar. Christ said: Mat 23:1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Mat 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: Mat 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. The Pharisees as they taught the law of God in the temple were endorsed by Christ himself and later by Paul when he said: Act 26:5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. You may not like the Pharisees, but Christ and later Paul endorsed them. When you keep an early 14 Passover and a Pentecost other than Sivan 6 you are following the Sadducees and I still can’t understand why anyone in their right mind would even think to do that. Here is what scripture says about the Sadducees. Act 23:8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. Some people seem to hate the Pharisees so much that they will bend over backwards to try to prove that Christ and His family were of the Sadducean Persuasion. Read the scripture again because if Christ and His family were of the Sadducean Persuasion as many believe then there is no hope what so ever for any of us to ever be resurrected. Look at it, the Sadducees say, “there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit.” Does anyone yet see the problem with following the Sadducees in anything? If Christ was of that persuasion, then it means that Christ did not believe in a resurrection, yet He was resurrected, He would not believe in angels or in spirits, yet Christ lived with angels and Christ is a spirit. You had better think real deeply about why you would follow after the doctrines of the Sadducees and not after the ones that both Christ and Paul endorsed. The Pharisees are not the only ones that Christ reprimanded; He also reprimanded the seven churches in Revelation. Do you yet not understand that many are called but few are chosen. Why would you not be chosen? Think about it deeply. It does matter what Holy Days you keep because the only ones that are to be kept are the ones that God has listed in His Law. The ones you make up are the ones He hates. The bible was written for the ecclesia and not for the entire world. So, He is not talking about hating Christmas or Easter though He does, in scripture He is talking about the Holy Days the ecclesia is making up because they hate Pharisees and do not want to do what God tells them in scripture to do. Dwight Flemings Article: Yet it appears that the Israelites didn’t arrive at Mount Sinai until the 15th day of the third month. “Houston, we have a problem!” Laura writes: Perhaps you have a problem, but I doubt that all of Houston has a problem. Why don’t you just keep the calendar that God left you to keep. After all it is kind of foolish to keep some Holy Days according to that calendar and not others. Also, there is no way that Exodus 19:1 refers all the way back to the day they left Rameses. Read it again. Exo 19:1 In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. Exodus 19:1 is referring to the word “third” here. If you are going to tell people it is referring to the 15th, the day they left, then why not say the 14th when the lamb was slain or let’s go back to the 1st of Nisan when the new moon appeared. When something is referred to it is generally only a short way away. I actually got my understanding of this scripture back in the early 2000’s and it was only a few months ago when I was doing research for a different article and ran across this stuff from the Talmud, so no I did not get my understanding from the Talmud, I got it from the Bible. This comes from the Talmud: From Talmud 68B: Rabbi Elazar said: All agree with regard to Atzeret, the holiday of Shavuot, that we require that it be also “for you,” meaning that it is a mitzva to eat, drink, and rejoice on that day. What is the reason? It is the day on which the Torah was given, and one must celebrate the fact that the Torah was given to the Jewish people. Rabba said: All agree with regard to Shabbat that we require that it be also “for you.” From Talmud 86B: The Sages taught: On the sixth day of the month of Sivan, the Ten Commandments were given to the Jewish people. Rabbi Yosei says: On the seventh day of the month. Rava said: Everyone agrees that the Jews came to the Sinai desert on the New Moon, as it is written here: “In the third month after the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai” (Exodus 19:1), without elaborating what day it was. The inspired word of God, the Bible says the law was given on Sivan 6 which would have been Pentecost. #1–They arrived at Mount Sinai on Sivan 3. (Exd. 19:1) #2–They had 2 days of preparation, Sivan 4 & 5. (Exd. 19:10) #3–They were to be prepared for the 3rd day, Sivan 6, on which they received the law. (Exd. 19:15-16) The count to Pentecost begins the day after Passover or Nisan 16. (What bride does not count the days until her wedding?) At the time of Moses, the law was given on Pentecost which is also known as the Feast of First Fruits. Later in the New Testament on Pentecost, God’s Holy Spirit was given to His people which is appropriate as the Holy Spirit is the means by which we are able to keep the law of God. On a future day of Pentecost, we believe that it will be the harvest of the First Fruits of God on which the Marriage Supper of the Lamb takes place in heaven. Dwight Flemings Article: Yet, when you read the instructions given in Leviticus 23:9-21, that late of a date for Pentecost is allowed. It may not be the norm, but God is not a fool. He foresaw that circumstances can sometimes cause a delayed harvest just as happens today. With ten plagues hitting Egypt that year, things were certainly not “normal.” Laura writes: Lev 23:9 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Lev 23:10 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest: Lev 23:11 And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it. Lev 23:12 And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf an he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the LORD. Lev 23:13 And the meat offering thereof shall be two tenth deals of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering made by fire unto the LORD for a sweet savour: and the drink offering thereof shall be of wine, the fourth part of an hin. Lev 23:14 And ye shall eat neither bread, nor parched corn, nor green ears, until the selfsame day that ye have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. Lev 23:15 And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete: Lev 23:16 Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD. Lev 23:17 Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of two tenth deals: they shall be of fine flour; they shall be baken with leaven; they are the firstfruits unto the LORD. Lev 23:18 And ye shall offer with the bread seven lambs without blemish of the first year, and one young bullock, and two rams: they shall be for a burnt offering unto the LORD, with their meat offering, and their drink offerings, even an offering made by fire, of sweet savour unto the LORD. Lev 23:19 Then ye shall sacrifice one kid of the goats for a sin offering, and two lambs of the first year for a sacrifice of peace offerings. Lev 23:20 And the priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits for a wave offering before the LORD, with the two lambs: they shall be holy to the LORD for the priest. Lev 23:21 And ye shall proclaim on the selfsame day, that it may be an holy convocation unto you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations. I am not seeing where there was a delay of any kind here. It says: “When ye be come into the land which I give unto you…” Looks like it was right on time and Joshua 5:10 backs it up. Jos 5:10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho. Jos 5:11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day. Jos 5:12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year. Dwight Flemings Article: If Pentecost did fall on the 17th day of the third month that year, then let’s determine the wave sheaf day by counting back from that date. If there were 29 days in the second month of the Hebrew Calendar as is calculated today, then 17 plus 29 gives us 46 days. The first month probably had 30 days as is calculated today. That would bring us to the 27th day of the first month when the wave sheaf offering would have occurred that year. If the day of the wave sheaf offering is delayed, then the count toward Pentecost (50th day) will not occur as it normally would in other years. Laura writes: I have not seen any proof for this foolishness. These are all things you made up so you can hold on to whatever doctrine you have that this is attached to. Dwight Flemings Article: That’s crazy you may think. Laura writes: As I stated earlier, they only camped three times between Rameses and the Red Sea. They traveled day and night, and they were in physically good shape so they only needed a week or less to get to the red sea. Dwight Flemings Article: After the Red Sea crossing and the threat of Pharaoh removed, the Israelites could travel on to Mount Sinai at a slower pace. Laura writes: Perhaps you should put your faith in Christ and what His word says and not promote these false doctrines to others. This is not the first time I have read where you make light of the Holy Days as if they are of no importance to you and should not be to others. If the Holy Days and the dates, they fall on were not important to God then He would not have put them into His Law and commanded that they be kept on certain dates. The whole idea of Firstfruits is that they be people who keep Gods Law and not Law breakers. |
