Yes, you read the title correctly. To introduce the topic of this discussion, I would like to begin by stating that there are many instances in early Biblical history of people marrying closely related family. Based on Biblical text it doesn’t seem to be a big deal. If we take the Bible literally at its word, this practice would have been necessary just after Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden, and then again immediately following the Genesis Flood. However, in the book of Leviticus 18:6 things appear to have changed. It states: “None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him.” Some might ask: “Why now? Did God suddenly change His mind?” Does the Bible know best? What we don’t usually take into consideration is that Adam and Eve had a 100% pure genetic code. #1. MUTATIONS Beginning at the generation immediately following that of Adam and Eve, copy errors would have been made in the DNA sequence, and over time, these errors would only worsen, producing non-beneficial genetic traits and mutations. #2. BIRTH DEFECTS Two people who are related will share a similar genetic make-up, in fact, it will identically overlap in some cases. This means that any recessive genetic traits have a great chance of being passed on to their children, and the more this inbreeding takes place, the more birth defects, mutations, and even mental disabilities. #3. THE BIBLE KNOWS BEST The above two are just a couple of the known reasons that it is not recommended to marry family members… But just because we are aware of scientific reasons does not mean that there aren’t more good reasons. The Bible ALWAYS knows best, and the Lord in His infinite wisdom told His people what to do for their own good. Perhaps down the road we will learn new insights which further verify the importance of this topic and reveal God’s wisdom and Divine inspiration. These are 3 reasons that it is not a good idea to marry individuals in your closely related family. At the appropriate time in history, we were commanded not to marry close relatives, and long before genetic science, once again, the Bible knew best.
